Competing visions: schooling the nation and the “revolt” at the Ockenden Tibetan school

Abstract This article examines the incident of a “revolt” in Ockenden Tibetan refugee school early 1960s. By analyzing this previously unknown within broader historical context years exile, aims to underline contested and contingent process nation-building exile. I argue that incident, as forgotten fragments past, provides us rare glimpse into history contestation over production national discourse on Tibet, where exiled Bonpos, non-Buddhist minority, attempted renegotiate their marginality by producing alternative Tibet. focusing fragment from exile decenter teleology nationalism bringing light one unrealized future agendas different groups Tibetans had those moments discursive formation.
